Your Salon Website: What Every Owner Should Know
One of the biggest problems salon owners run into with websites is simple. They don’t know where anything lives!
And that’s understandable. A salon website often involves several different systems working together. Knowing where those pieces live protects your business and makes working with designers or marketing professionals much easier.
Here are the three things every salon owner should know:
1 – Your Domain Name & Location
This is your website address. Examples: www.salontarget.com
Domains are usually registered through companies like GoDaddy, Squarespace, Namecheap, or other registrars. Typically these are renewed annually and can cost anywhere from 9.99 to 29.99 per year.
2 – Your Website Platform or Host
This is where your website actually lives online. Examples: Squarespace, Wix or WordPress. This is often different from your domain provider. You may pay for hosting monthly or annually.Typical monthly charges for a website host with its own editor like Squarespace is around $30 monthly. You may pay less if you are using WordPress and hosting on something like Bluehost or Siteground and can vary from $10-$30/monthly.
3 – Your Email Provider
Common examples include: Google Workspace, Microsoft Outlook or other email hosting services.
Why this is so important to do now? If someone calls claiming your domain needs renewal or your hosting has a problem, knowing where your services live helps you verify quickly. It also prevents a web designer or agency from accidentally locking you out of your own website. Note: save your usernames and passwords in known and safe place (see below)!
Tips for Working with Web Designers
It’s important to have a decent website that is not just beautiful but also mobile friendly as well. If it’s time for a refresh and you’re looking for someone to help, please keep this in mind. A good designer should:
- Explain things clearly
- Give you access to your accounts
- Avoid locking you into hidden contracts
- And most importantly, you should always have access to your own domain and website accounts, especially access to edit your own website easily.
